Dietary supplement using cockroach meal: impact on growth indices and biochemical responses in hybrid catfish

Globally the need to substitute fishmeal with other animal protein sources in fish diet has gained more attention; which is occasioned by increasing cost of fish. A 12-week trial was conducted ascertain growth indices and biochemical response hybrid catfish (Clarias gariepinus(♀) Heterobranchus bidorsalis (♂)) fed cockroach meal supplement. total 800 were randomly distributed into four dietary treatments (Diet A- control feed), Diet B (50 % 50 fishmeal), C (100 meal) D fishmeal). Each treatment replicated 35 per experimental pond a completely randomized design. Progressive weight gain determined bi-weekly. At end study period, fishes sacrificed for proximate compositions plasma analyses (glucose, triglyceride, cholesterol, protein, albumin) using standard protocols. The revealed that parameters (Weight gain, Average Protein efficiency ratio, Feed Conversion rate, Specific rate Survival (SR) influenced (p>0.05). highest recorded 1 (8847.73±292.65 g) > 2 (7816.33±121.71 g)>Diet 3 (7811.67±566.08 >Diet 4 (7022.00±44.193 g). Similarly, best feed conversion ratio found (10.12±0.01),>Diet B, had same values 0.11 g respectively. There no significant (p>0.05) difference indicators measured when compared A). Thus, indicating all healthy normal physiological activities. Cockroach can therefore, be used as supplement without having any adverse effect on well-being fingerlings
